SMX Day 1 - What’s new with Video Search Marketing?

Danny Sullivan: Search Engine Land (Editor-in-Chief)

Speakers:
Michael Benedek: AlmondNet (VP)
Gregory Markel: Infuse Creative (President)
Eric Papczun: Performics (Director of Natural Search Optimization)
Tom Wilde: EveryZing (CEO)

Video search marketing is a hot topic these days. Everyone is getting on the video Internet bandwagon or needs to be. I mean NBC even has videos on the Internet these days available for you to stream on a shared video site called Hulu. Your SMX packet has the Performics and EveryZing slides. Performics really caught my eye while talking about Google’s GAUDI (Google Audio Indexing) which right now is being used on youtube for politics. You can search Google Audio Indexing and find some videos they are working on in the political field. This seems great for NPR to post some boring videos that can be audio tagged but it seems as we are a long way from our “hip” videos with music and loud noise picking up words that Google’s Audio Indexing can pick up or understand. We learned about some great new marketing campaigns that plan to go public very soon at Youtube that function basically as a “Adwords” but for internal promotion to Youtube videos and channels that you can buy traffic for. Basically like a recommended videos for keywords and channels. I could keep going forever from this conference but I won’t because Tim Armstrong from Google is about to hop on the podium and speak but everyone in this section did a great job. The one negative I really saw out of this was everyone kept calling “Youtube” a wild west but refused to acknowledge worthy alternatives video sites or recommend people persue niche video websites for their market (such as the automotive network as www.streetfire.net which we love).

SMX Day 1- Social Networking for Newspapers & Magazines

Moderator:
Alex Bennert: Wall Street Journal (In House SEO)

Speakers:
Brent Csutoras: Brentcsutoras.com (Online Marketing Specialist)
Adam Sherk: New York Times (Search/PR Strategy)
Chris Winfield: 10e20 (President)

This was one of my favorite sections before walking into SMX that I thought I would get the most out of and I was right. While Chris from 10e20 stole the show and provided great information about social networking the other speakers brought out some key facts. My favorite thing from this session was that Chris Winfeld dubbed social media, “a giant conversation online.” This is so true and many people tend to forget that. His agency has a great blog that you will want to check out on for social topics http://www.10e20.com/blog/. Brent brought up some very fantastic items including his thoughts on the time/value benefit on different social sites around the Internet. This section didn’t come with any powerpoints in your book but Brent also a blog that he seems to be very active on at brentcsutoras.com. Overall an amazing session that I wish could of lasted longer, just seemed to short and we had to take in way to much valuable information in such a short time but such is life.

SMX Day 1- Search Marketing for Newspapers & Magazines

Alex Bennert: Wall Street Journal (In House SEO)

Speakers:

Uli Muenker: Business Week (Search Marketing Manager)

Eric Papczun: Performics (Director of Natural Search Optimization)

Julie Rutherford: Washington Post (Marketing Director)

Marshall Simmonds: New York Times (Search Strategist)

I walked into this session a tad late sadly due to a mix up with my badge and myself not being quite the morning go getter that everyone else in New York City seems to be. This was a great kick off for the conference and Eric Papczun from Proformics stuck out to me the most by far. He touched on some great topics such as what ideal sizes they felt Google picked up on images and how to focus your keywords on a local level. He made some very valid points for Google News and how if you are creating unique and original content that you should be opted in. Even if you might not consider yourself a news site it can be key. Julie touched on some great things at the Post she works with her staff to get proper titling done for stories which I really enjoyed. All and all a great section and the SMX book has the Proformics slides if you happened to be in another session, so reviewing Eric’s piece is very easy on page 36.

Unable to make the Search Marketing Expo East 2008?

October 6th, 2008 by admin

Well day one has wrapped up and I have been having a blast at SMX 2008. Not everyone is able to make the trek out to New York City so here are two quick ways you can keep up with the conference over the next two days. First off, you have the twitter search which is updated by members at the convention constantly. You just enter #smx into Twitter’s search and you can stay updated on what is going on. Also, SMX asked everyone to tag photos on Flickr with SMX, SMXEast08, and SMXeast so you can sift through exciting photos of the show through Yahoo powered Flickr as well! Hope that helps you stay in tune with everything going on at SMX East 2008, we are going to blog about Day one right now.
